Dolly Parton has spent sixty years being simultaneously the most decorated and the least pretentious person in Nashville, and Christmas is her natural habitat — the television specials, the theme park lit up from October, the fact that she has recorded more festive material than most artists record in total. A countdown calendar is almost too obvious, and it works for exactly that reason.

Country Magic

The design does not try for tasteful, which is correct. Country Christmas has its own visual grammar — sparkle, warm light, a guitar somewhere in the frame — and a box that whispered would be missing the point entirely. It sits happily in a room that already has a lot going on.

Twenty-Four Doors

Die-cut dotted lines run around every window, so each door comes up under a thumbnail rather than needing to be cut. Inside, a moulded plastic tray holds twenty-four acrylic ornaments in separate compartments — which is what lets the set be packed away flat in January and come out intact.

Each piece is 3.2 cm square, printed on both faces with one matte side and one gloss, and has a hanging tab punched straight through the acrylic. A protective film covers one face on arrival and wants peeling before anything goes on a hook.

Where to Put It

A kitchen shelf, a dresser, the top of the record player if there is one. The gloss face earns its keep under a warm lamp, so somewhere with a side light beats somewhere lit from overhead. Keep it indoors and dry.

Looking After the Pieces

Dry cloth only — anything damp or abrasive leaves a haze that does not polish out, and it shows worse on a light, sparkly print than on a dark one. Back into the tray at the end of the month and the tabs stay straight.

Are the ornaments music-themed?

They follow the box, so the set reads as one collection rather than as generic baubles that happen to be in a country-themed carton.

Can the windows be reopened?

Die-cut doors open once. The box is a single-season object; the twenty-four pieces are the part you keep and rehang.

Is it heavy enough to hang on a tree?

The opposite problem — at 3.2 cm square and a few grams each, they hang off thin branches that would droop under a glass bauble.

Would this suit someone who does not celebrate Christmas much?
