Pearl Jam at Twenty

Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990, and their debut album Ten arrived in August 1991 with “Alive”, “Even Flow” and “Jeremy”. It became one of the defining records of the grunge years and has sold millions of copies. In 2011 the band marked twenty years with PJ20, a documentary directed by Cameron Crowe, an accompanying book and a two-day festival at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. In 2017 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Vedder’s stage presence is part of that story: the climbing, the leaps from the rigging, and the habit of throwing his whole body into a song. A still photograph like this one captures that energy in a way a logo cannot.

The band has never really stopped. Vedder’s solo soundtrack for the 2007 film Into the Wild earned him a Golden Globe for the song “Guaranteed”, and in 2024 Pearl Jam released Dark Matter and took it on a world tour, more than three decades after Ten. Dye-sublimation printing places the photo into the fibres, so the grey tones stay crisp and will not crack or peel.
