The Tour Behind the Shirt

The Dream Within a Dream Tour supported Britney’s third album, “Britney,” released in 2001. It opened on November 1, 2001 in Columbus, Ohio and ran to July 28, 2002 in Mexico City, 69 shows in all. Pollstar counted about $53.3 million in ticket sales from 66 of those shows, one of the biggest tours of its time.

It was also one of the most ambitious pop productions of the period. “I’m a Slave 4 U” closed the main set in a jungle scene filled with smoke and lasers, artificial snow fell during “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know,” and the encore projected Britney onto a curtain of falling water, a rig that used nearly two tons of water. HBO broadcast the November 18, 2001 show live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and that broadcast won a 2002 Emmy for technical direction. The DVD, “Britney Spears Live from Las Vegas,” followed in early 2002 and became the way a lot of fans who never made it to an arena saw the show.
