Buffalo joined the American Football League as a founding member in 1960, back when the upstart league was playing in front of half-empty stadiums and nobody expected it to last. It lasted, and so did the Bills, through four straight Super Bowls and the decades either side of them. Sixty-six years of that is worth a countdown.

From the First AFL Season

1960 gave the league eight founding clubs, and Buffalo is one of the handful still playing under the same name in the same city. Anniversary merchandise usually picks a trophy; this picks the start date instead, which is the more honest thing to celebrate in a town that measures loyalty in decades rather than titles.

How the Countdown Works

Twenty-four windows, each outlined with die-cut dotted lines so a thumbnail opens one cleanly without dragging into its neighbours. Behind them, a moulded plastic tray holds the pieces in their own compartments — which is also what makes packing the set away in January straightforward rather than a bag of loose acrylic.

Each ornament is 3.2 cm square with a tab punched through the acrylic, printed matte on one face and gloss on the other. Peel the protective film off before hanging; it is easy to miss and it dulls everything underneath while it is on. The box itself measures 13.5 x 18 x 3 cm and weighs 135 g.

Putting a Name on It

The name you enter at checkout is printed into the front artwork at production. It makes the box specific to one person — which matters more for a countdown than for most gifts, because somebody has to open it every morning for twenty-four days.

Where to Keep It

Somewhere passed every morning: a hall table, a kitchen counter, the shelf by the coffee machine. Indoors and away from radiators — paper warps and acrylic clouds, and neither recovers. A dry cloth handles fingerprints on the pieces; nothing damp.
