There is a particular week in early December when the song becomes unavoidable — in the supermarket, in the taxi, at somebody’s office party — and resistance stops being an option. This sweatshirt is for the people who gave up resisting years ago and started enjoying it instead.

Why This One and Not a Novelty Jumper

Most festive knitwear is designed to be laughed at once and then folded away for eleven months. This one is a plain sweatshirt with a graphic on it, which is a quieter proposition — you can wear it to the shops on the twenty-eighth without anyone raising an eyebrow, and it will still be a normal item of clothing in March.

Fabric and Cut

A crew-neck pullover with a brushed inner face — the soft side against the skin, the smoother side out. Ribbed collar, cuffs and hem hold their shape rather than stretching out after a few wears, and there is no hood to bunch under a coat.

The cut is straight through the body with a dropped shoulder, so it layers over a shirt without pulling. It sits in that useful middle weight: warm enough on its own indoors, thin enough to go under a jacket when you leave.

Wearing It

December evenings, mostly — the stretch between the first decorations going up and the last box being carried back to the loft. It also survives the office dress-down day, which is more than can be said for anything with bells on it.

Washing It

Turn it inside out and machine wash cold — that protects both the graphic and the brushed inner face, which is what flattens first in a hot wash. Hang to dry rather than tumbling; heat is what shrinks a sweatshirt and hardens the nap. If it needs pressing, iron on the reverse.

Is this a knitted Christmas jumper or a sweatshirt?

A sweatshirt — smooth jersey face, brushed inside, no knitted pattern. That is deliberate: it reads as everyday clothing rather than as a costume for one party.

Will the graphic crack after washing?

Washing cold and inside out is what keeps a printed sweatshirt looking new. The things that damage a print are heat and friction, which is why the dryer is worth skipping.

How warm is it?

Mid-weight. Warm on its own in a heated room, and thin enough to layer under a coat without bulking at the shoulders.

Does it shrink?

Not if it stays out of a hot wash and a hot dryer. Cold water and a hanger keep the length and the cuffs where they started.
