Why No. 1 Matters in Charlotte

Bogues came out of Wake Forest and was drafted 12th overall by the Washington Bullets in 1987. A year later the expansion Hornets took him in the 1988 expansion draft, and he spent the next nine seasons in Charlotte, from 1988 to 1997. He ran the offence for the first winning Hornets teams of the 1990s alongside Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, and he left the franchise as its career leader in assists and steals.

He was also, simply, fun to watch. A guard a foot shorter than most of the players around him, he made a career out of quickness, pressure defence and passes nobody else saw. For a generation of kids who were told they were too small for something, Bogues was proof that it did not have to matter.

The jersey uses the teal pinstripe design that defined the Hornets in the 1990s. The franchise’s original uniforms were designed by fashion designer Alexander Julian, and the teal-and-purple palette became one of the best-selling looks in the NBA.
